چکیده

This retrospective study aimed at assessing the reliability of morphometric measurements performed on the frontal sinus using the frontal sinus index (FSI) for sex determination on cranio-facial and sinuses CBCT scans. 77 CBCT explorations were performed by Planmeca 3D Mid (Planmeca, Helsinki, Finland) and Romexis 3.6 software (Planmeca, Helsinki, Finland) on adult individuals. The FSI was determined on mid-sagittal CBCT slices in all selected patients. FSI is somewhat predictive of gender. When the discriminant function predicting gender based on log2FSI was applied to a validation dataset, 92% of females were correctly classified but only half of males were correctly classified. Adding width, height and age variables did not significantly increase the ability to predict gender. The predictive value of FSI for determining gender may need to be supplemented with other information to achieve a high level of accuracy.

Age Differences of Human Frontal Sinus Measurements using CT Scan

Background and Objectives: The frontal sinus is regarded as one of the human paranasal sinuses located in the frontal bone as a triangular-shaped cavity, which originates as separated space from the anterior ethmoid cells. Computed Tomography (CT) is a completely non-destructive technique that uses a high density of contrast to identify the air inside any bony sinus with soft tissue demarcated ...

Cephalometric Analysis for Gender Determination Using Maxillary Sinus Index: A Novel Dimension in Personal Identification

Purpose. Radiography is important in forensic odontology for the identification of humans. The maxillary sinus is the largest of the paranasal sinuses and first to develop. Sinus radiography has been used for identification of skeletal remains and determination of gender. Hence, the aim and objectives of the present study were to establish a new method for gender determination using maxillary s...

Determination of Sex by Discriminant Function Analysis of Lateral Radiographic Cephalometry

Objective: The present study is an attempt to develop a method to determine sex from the skull with lateral cephalometric radiograph using discriminant function analysis. Study design: The superciliary ridges, frontal sinuses, sella, cranial base and mastoid process were adopted as objects of lateral radiographic cephalometric measurements. The present study included cephalometric radiographs o...

Reliability of a Novel CBCT-Based 3D Classification System for Maxillary Canine Impactions in Orthodontics: The KPG Index

The aim of this study was to evaluate both intra- and interoperator reliability of a radiological three-dimensional classification system (KPG index) for the assessment of degree of difficulty for orthodontic treatment of maxillary canine impactions. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of fifty impacted canines, obtained using three different scanners (NewTom, Kodak, and Planmeca), were ...
